On January 18th, people from several of our Richmond Christian and Jewish congregations gathered at Beth Tikvah Synagogue for the first of several small group discussions this spring. Our topic was the story of Samuel ... "God is Calling: Is Somebody Going To Answer?"

Next in the series of discussion groups is "Let's Celebrate Together Easter and Passover".

Annual General Meeting Feb 19

Sunday, February 19th, Annual General Meeting

Coming up for all congregation members is our AGM, held following worship services and a shared potluck lunch. The AGM document with bulletin of reports, budget and financial information will be available at the church.

On January 22nd, a Special Congregational Meeting was held for discussion and respectful debate of decisions made at the 2011 National Church Convention regarding same sex blessings. Doing so will allow us to devote AGM time to discussion of other topics of importance. There will be a vote at our AGM, so if you were unable to attend the special meeting, you can find ELCIC documents related to the topic at the links below.

Ash Wednesday, Lent and Easter

We invite all to participate as you are able in our Lent and Easter worship services . . .

Ash Wednesday, February 22 at 7 pm

Holden Evening Prayer Service, a half hour of contemplative worship and prayer, Thursday evenings during Lent. March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 7 to 7:30 pm

Maundy Thursday, April 5, we gather first for a light supper at 6 pm, followed by Holy Commuion service at 7 pm

Good Friday, April 6, worship hour is tentatively scheduled for 3 pm

Easter Worship on Sunday morning, April 8th, 10 am.

Also coming up is the multi-congregation Easter Sunrise Worship Service at Garry Point Park.

LUMS Meal Feb 25th

Our congregation will be preparing and serving the LUMS hot meal on Saturday, February 25.

Many helping hands will be needed as are designated finanacial gifts to enable us to purchase food supplies. For more information check your Sunday bulletins, or contact any member of the Social Ministries committee.

Thanks to the many helping hands of our lutheran congregations, and our ecumenical friends and volunteers, LUMS is able (most months) to prepare and serve a monthly hot meal to some 300 to 400 people of the downtown eastside.

Whether shopping, making salad or cookies, driving volunteers, washing dishes, serving food, handing out cookies, donations of time to this ministry are most. As one particpant told a congregation member at one of our meals, "You are angels!". LUMS is always in need of extra helping hands in many ways ... volunteering time in the office to serve a cup of coffee or chat with anyone who drops in ... making soup or cookies that can be put in the freezer for lunchtime hospitality ... helping serve at any of the hot meals ... keeping the pantry supplied with basic foods that can be distributed when needed ... supporting the pastoral staff with prayers.

An Invitation ... The Greatest Story

We'll be resuming Adult Bible Study and Discussion on Wednesday evening, January 4th. You are invited to come, just contact Pastor Tim if you are interested!

Do you ever wonder how different people can make completely and absolutely fundamentally different claims about the Bible, what the Bible may be saying to us in the 21st century - even about what the purpose of God becoming human in Jesus is? If you do - that's great and this invitation is for you.

Or do you ever wonder how the Bible eventually came to be - or why Lutherans and Roman Catholics or Anglicans for that matter have different Bibles? Well, if so, or even if you didn't know that, this invitation is for you.

I would like to invite you to attend sessions/classes/discussion group that will be happening at Our Saviour in the Fireside Room on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, beginning October 26 (there will be 7 or 8 classes up to mid December, and 8 or 9 classes after Christmas).

Some of the topics are . . . . Introducing the Story Behind the Story . . . . A God Created World, A God Formed People, Two Beginnings . . . . A Freedom Leader, A Gift (that's right, gift) of Law and a Long Journey Home . . . . Holy Land, Holy War, Unsettling Times and a Love Story . . . . What Are All Those Kings and Kingdoms About? . . . . Trails of Tears and Joy . . . . God Speaks - Through Prophets - to People . . . . Poetry and Songs, Proverbs and Prayers - For Worship - For All of Life

These first sessions will cover what we as Christians call the Old Testament - which incidentally is absolutely essential for having some understanding of what is going on in the New Testament.

The format will be some pre-reading 8-10 pages in a participant's book which we provide; some reading in the Lutheran Study Bible (an amazing Bible) which you can purchase at a reduced price if you decided to come to the course, and lots of discussion (everyone's perspectives, experiences will be respected), and the viewing of an 8-10 minutes DVD weekly, where an incredible sand artist works "magic" in leading us into the texts for that week.

Sunday Coffee Hour

Did you know ... that if you sign up to do Sunday baking, you only do baking ... if you sign up for coffee, you only do coffee. Some people have been thining they have to do both - this is not so! Bakers need only bring their baking by Sunday morning. Coffee makers prepare the coffee and then do clean up after service. Sign up sheets are on the bulletin board, please participate as you are able to help on Sunday mornings.

Parents!

Does your child play the piano or other instrument?

Does your child have a good rhythmic sense?

Is your child interested in percussion instruments... drum, shakers, tone blocks etc?

We have opportunities in our services to accompany hymns or to play during the offering and at other times during worship. All you need to do is be willing to prepare and practice for the selected times. Speak to Bev or Calla for more details.
